Will Bear Pepper Spray Stop a Cougar?

Are you preparing to do some camping this summer? How about some hiking in the woods? Or maybe you see bear and mountain lions right from your own porch. It's really a good idea to always have bear pepper spray on hand if you do.

However, where there are bears, there are other wild animals. Seeing a cougar, otherwise known as a mountain lion, is now becoming more frequent in both daylight hours and near populated areas. Although both cougar and bear attacks are rare, it doesn't mean you should ignore the possibility it could happen to you or your loved ones. You should always be prepared by carrying bear pepper spray.

It's a little more difficult to prepare for the silent attack of a cougar than the noisy charge of a bear, so you must be ever attentive in any area where cougars may reside. Cougars are as adept at silently stalking and attacking their prey as a house cat is at stalking a mouse.

Unlike the bear's fake charge to show his power and dominance, a cougar will take advantage of its silent approach, attacking without warning. A cougar running towards you won't stop until it has attacked. This could make it difficult to use the bear pepper spray in time to stop the attack. However, if you CAN get the spray out and activated on an approaching cougar, it will still effect it the same as a bear. It will instantly inflame the mucous membranes of the eyes, nose and mouth causing temporary blindness and difficulty breathing.

Usually cougars look for small prey such as children if they are going to attack a human at all. It is rare for a cougar to attack a human, but if it sees a lone child and the large cat is hungry or protecting its food source, the child is an easy target. Another reason for an attack on a child is if the cougar is injured and can't go after a fast moving deer. In these cases, the only possible effectiveness of bear pepper spray would be if an adult were nearby with a can of the spray.

If an adult witnesses an attack by a cougar, empty the can of spray in its face, causing it to drop the child in agony, hopefully saving the child's life. Even though it will also effect the child, it may be your only hope of rescue. Try to keep the victim calm as you get help.

The best protection of children in any area where wild animals may be present is keeping them within sight and reach of an adult. In other words, don't let children run ahead or lag behind on hikes. Even in a secure campsite, don't let children wander off to explore unattended by a grown up.

Cougars are awesome beautiful creatures, but unfortunately they are becoming less afraid of humans because of our encroaching presence on their habitat. We are moving towards them and they are moving towards us. It is inevitable that our worlds will collide at times and confrontations occur. Always be alert to your surroundings and use all of your senses when outdoors. Take off the head sets and put away the cell phones. Enjoy nature, but always have a can of bear pepper spray handy to protect you and your loved ones if the situation arises. Hopefully it never will.
