In united states of America 18% people head for having a medigap plan along with Medicare original plan. Now what exactly is medigap plan in reality? It is not other than a simple policy to cover up all the gaps created by original Medicare plan in order to fill up the gaps those are unattained by the original one such as in hospital bed fee, other secondary fees and expenditures and etc. but one main thing that you have to be remembered is that you can not apply for a medigap insurance plan if you are not having an original Medicare plan. And these plans are solely governed by private bodies. But the rules are common that are to be followed by all insurance companies who will sell the medigap health insurance plans.

If you want to be a part of this health insurance plan to supplement your original Medicare plan then you have to enroll your name in part A and part B of the original Medicare plan. You can obtain a Medigap plan on a guaranteed issue basis during the open enrollment period, which begins within 6 months of turning 65 or enrolling in Medicare Part B at 65 or older.

There are 12 Medigap plans, labeled A through L. Of these plans offered before the 2006 changes took effect, only H, I and J offered prescription drug coverage. The three plans feature a deductible as well as coinsurance to cover 50 percent of the drug benefit. Each of the plans also had a payment cap for the drug benefit, with the J plan's cap set higher than either H plan or I plan. If you were enrolled in one of these three plans before 2006, you are eligible to keep it. Anyone enrolling in Medigap after 2006 cannot get prescription drug coverage through Medigap.

The Medigap plan A is the most basic plan while plans B-L offers every thing that is in plan A along with some extra coverage for each of them. On the other hand Plans K-L offers service coverage similar to Plans A-J, but the cost sharing for the basic benefits is at different levels. The Medigap plans B through J offers some extra benefits. However there are some people who want to have extra benefits offered by plans B through J and are ready to pay more for them. These plans cover all the basic benefits of Plan A. And along with that they also provide some extra benefits that are much helpful. While Medigap plans A-J also pays for the first three pints of blood you may need each year, which is totally excluded from original Medicare plan. On the other hand Medigap plans B through J also covers the hospital deductibles for each benefit period, which usually saves your money if you need to stay in the hospital.

For skilled nursing home costs it is true that he Original Medicare pays all for the first 20 days of each benefit period.

If Laid Off, Most Americans Could Not Afford Health Insurance

Los Angeles, CA May 14, 2009 — Almost a third (32 percent) of employed Americans could not afford to purchase health insurance if laid off from work, and almost two-thirds (65 percent) could only afford it for six months, according to a new consumer survey.

For employees age 65 and over on Medicare, the loss of that secondary employer insurance can be a major blow, leaving them without the complete medical coverage they need.

Surprisingly, about 64 percent of those who are covered by their employer—including seniors—don't know how much their employers contribute toward their health insurance. Yet, if laid off, they would have to pay the entire monthly premium plus an administrative fee if opting for COBRA coverage. While the federal government is presently offering a 65 percent subsidy on COBRA premiums for up to nine months for eligible individuals, purchasing COBRA coverage can still be cost prohibitive for those collecting unemployment.

For seniors, an alternative to COBRA is an affordable Medicare supplement insurance plan. Yet finding the right plan that offers the best benefits for the lowest cost can seem overwhelming because of all the information seniors must wade through.

For Barbara Van Dellen of Woodlake, Calif., help was no further than a click away when she was referred to www.MedicareSupplementPlans.com for her Medicare supplement insurance needs. Of the site's brokers, she said, "You came to us highly recommended by four of our friends. When I called, you responded in a timely manner:your explanation of the Medicare supplement program was excellent:"

The Web site, which specializes in Medicare supplement insurance, also known as Medigap insurance, gives those 65 and older the opportunity to compare rates, plans and benefits from several prominent insurance companies.

Despite the alternatives available, one in two Americans who currently have health insurance don't believe if they lost their current health plan they would be able to find equal coverage elsewhere. What many don't realize is that there are affordable alternatives out there, including Medicare supplement plans for seniors over age 65.

Medigap Insurance is private health insurance designed for seniors to supplement original Medicare.Medicare Supplemental Plan covers certain health costs that Medicare doesn't.

Along with the numerous health insurances, there is insurance available in the market known as medicare supplement insurance. This insurance is also called as Medigap as this insurance actually fills in the gaps of the Original Medicare. These policies also cover some of the extra of health care costs which are not covered like the copayments, deductibles and coinsurance in the main insurance plans. If you are totally clueless about the medicare supplement insurance, do not fret. I am here to guide you.

This insurance basically covers the certain things which are not covered by the Original Medicare. Therefore, by purchasing a medicare supplement plan, you may actually be able to get 100 percent coverage for the amounts which are approved by Medicare regarding your healthcare, depending on plan which employ. It should be noted that the medicare supplements are traded by the private insurance companies. You should make a note that the medicare supplement insurance is not same as the Original Medicare or the Medicare advantage plan. This supplement plan is not used to acquire the Medicare benefits but the plan is designed so that you can acquire the benefits which are not provided by the Original Medicare.

The insurance companies which sell the Medicare supplement insurance policy are only supposed to send the standardized policies. Alphabets like A, F and L are used to represent the standardized policies. The current plans run from the Plan A to the Plan L. It is obligatory for the insurance companies that sell the plan to provide similar basic benefits with the plan. The only difference in these policies is in their cost which may differ for different companies. The companies that offer these plans are supposed to strictly follow the state and federal laws. You can even avail this policy as a couple however it should be noted that even in as a couple, each person is required to purchase separate medicare supplement insurance.

This insurance policy also helps you to manage your extra expenses. You will be free to select any doctor of your choice who accepts Medicare and you virtually do not have to fill any forms to do so. You can use the benefits in any part of the United States. If you are planning to move your house, your insurance coverage will follow you wherever you go. Some plans even cover the foreign travel under the emergency services. You should definitely inquire with your agent about the same.

This plan automatically gets renewed so long as your premiums get paid on time and therefore you do not have to waste your time on paperwork for the same. There is also a trial period of one month for this medicare supplement insurance, and if you are not satisfied with the policy, you can get a full refund of your premium. However, I am sure that this situation is almost impossible. There are also other services like vision discounts, gym membership and pharmacy savings along with some medicare supplement insurance plans. So go get your Medicare insurance now!

Medicare Part D Insurance - What Does Medicare Part D Insurance Offer?

People need to be covered by medical insurance in order to be prepared to face any medical emergency. The costs related to medical treatment, medicines and surgery are increasing by the day. The common man will be relieved if his bills are paid by his insurance company as and when need arises. There are a variety of medical insurance plans offered by different companies. You need to pick out one that will take care of your hospitalization expenses for you when you are not in a position to do so. Generally everyone opts for the Medicare policy that has been around for years. But times, they are a changing. New policies have evolved over time in answer to the changes in the economy. New policies cover the gaps that are present in the old plans.

Medicare Part D insurance was first introduced in the market in 2006.It is a part of Medicare. It was introduced with the aim of helping elderly people to make payments for medicines. All those who are qualified for this program can avail of the coverage irrespective of their income, their state of health or the medicines they are using, Medicare Part D insurance pays for standard medication as well as brands. A majority of the druggists are part of this plan. To avoid the few who are not, always speak to the pharmacist before you buy anything from him. This plan came in to effect in order to shield the common man from the rising cost of medicines needed to cure illness as well as from unforeseen bills that may crop up later in life. You can enroll for Medicare Part D insurance on fulfilling the eligibility requirement. You can go for this plan three months before you turn 65. If you are covered by Medicare before turning 65 as a result of sickness, disability, etc. you are qualified for the plan 90 days before the 25th month of payments being made for disability. If you are late in signing up for the program i.e. after the passage of original eligibility time period, you will have to pay a penalty.

You could opt for the medication coverage plan as a part of your main plan or go for a Medicare plan that covers the expenses of drugs. The Medicare Advantage policy would be ideal in such a scenario. A lot depends on the type of insurance plan you are enrolled under. Accordingly you can decide how to gain from the benefits given by Medicare Part D insurance. Whatever option you decide on, this plan will pay the cost incurred on prescription drugs at a medical shop that you can choose according to your convenience provided it is covered under the policy. You will have to pay premiums every month, an amount that will be deducted per year and a part of the expense of the drugs. Those who belong to the low income group will be eligible for extra help. The premium amount or the deductible will be waived.

Medigap Plan J in 2010 - What's In It For You From June 1 Onwards

Oftentimes, when time comes for seniors to request a supplement to their existing Medicare plan, they go with Medigap Plan J for the simple reason that it fills in all eight gaps not covered in basic Medicare. These eight gaps - basic benefits, skilled nursing facility co-insurance, foreign travel emergency, Part A and Part B deductible, Part B excess, at-home recovery and preventive care (not covered by Medicare) - are all appealing factors for consumers looking for a supplement plan. Also, Medigap Plan J is the only supplementary plan that pays benefits for preventive care benefits, so those considering other Medigap plans may take this into consideration. Indeed, Plan J was, to many, the best option available. But that would most likely be changing within a few weeks' time.

As a lot of you may know, there are going to be several major changes to the current Medicare Supplement structure effective June 1, 2010. And one of the major changes to take effect is the discontinuation of four plans, including Medigap Plan J. That's the bad news. The good news for existing Plan J planholders is that they will not lose their current Plan J coverage once the changes take effect. As for the reason for Plan J's elimination, the simplest way to put it would be due to redundancy of features. Plan F offers everything that Plan J does except preventive care and at-home recovery, and since new laws are eliminating these two benefits from all plans due to a lack of use, this would make Plan J an exact carbon copy of Plan F. That said, there will be no more new Plan J policies sold after June 1, 2010. Together with Medigap plans E, H and I, Plan J will no longer be available once the new structure takes effect, and with the addition of Plans M and N, there will then be ten different Medigap plans to choose from.

However, even existing planholders may want to think twice. While existing Plan J holders can relax and sit back as their coverage would continue on, the effects of Plan J's elimination remain uncertain, even for the most experienced Medicare insurance experts. A lot are in agreement that Plan J rates may increase dramatically compared to other plans, but we may need to wait a few years before seeing the actual, immediate effects and having a way to predict what would happen ten to twenty years from now. It is always best to consult an insurance specialist first before considering moving to a new plan or sticking with Plan J, but we would strongly suggest waiting it out and getting a Medigap Plan F instead due to the uncertainty surrounding the future of existing Plan J policies.

Currently, there are twelve Medicare supplemental plans, better known as Medigap, and regardless which insurance provider you go to, they are mandated by law to have the same benefits. Plan A is a prerequisite to be offered by insurance providers, and after which it would be the company's discretion as to what Medicare supplemental plans they would offer. All Medigap plans include hospitalization (Part A coinsurance and coverage for an additional year after Medicare benefits), medical expenses (Part B coinsurance) and blood (first three pints of blood per year). A look at the list below would give you additional details on each of the twelve Medicare supplemental plans available till May 31, 2010.

Plan A - Basic benefits only

Plan B - Basic benefits with Medicare Part A deductible

Plan C - All benefits of Plan B plus skilled nursing coinsurance, foreign travel emergency and at-home recovery

Plan D - All benefits of Plan B plus skilled nursing coinsurance and foreign travel emergency

Plan E - All benefits of Plan D plus preventive care

Plan F - All benefits of Plan D plus Part B deductible and 100% Part B Excess deductible

Plan G - Same as Plan F, but with 80% Part B Excess deductible and at-home recovery

Plan H - Same as Plan D

Plan I - All benefits of Plan D plus at-home recovery

Plan J - Basic benefits, skilled nursing coinsurance, Part A and Part B deductible, Part B excess (100%), foreign travel emergency, at-home recovery and preventive care (ALL POSSIBLE BENEFITS)

Plan K - 50% of basic benefits plus 100% Part A coinsurance

Plan L - 75% of basic benefits plus 100% Part A coinsurance

By June 1, 2010, though, there will be radical changes for all existing Medicare supplemental plans. Plans E, H, I and J will be eliminated, mainly due to the fact that they would become similar to existing plans with the removal of preventive care and at-home recovery benefits. These two benefits are set to be eliminated because of a lack of use. Also, since Medicare has added screening processes for several forms of cancer, preventive care and at-home recovery has further become outdated. Part B Excess deductible will now be increased to 100% on Plan G if health providers do not accept assignment, while Plan M and N would make their debuts on the first of June. Below are details of the upcoming Plan M and N.

Part M - 50% of Part A inpatient hospital deductible, full coverage for core benefit and daily coinsurance charges, foreign travel emergency

Plan N - 100% of Part A inpatient hospital deductible, co-pays of up to $20 for office visits and up to $50 for emergency room visits

For those with existing Medicare supplemental plans, there will be no changes to their existing policy. But would-be Medicare supplemental plan subscribers need to keep the upcoming changes in mind when signing up for a new plan.
